There are many benefits to partnering with patients in medical research. Yet despite much to be gained, patients and researchers often fail to meaningfully partner to advance medical science. How might we create trusting relationships between patients and researchers? What models might exist to enable inclusivity and respect of all relevant stakeholders in the medical research enterprise? These are just some of the topics we will cover in this Stanford Online course.

Patients can move past the challenges of misunderstood roles and mismatched priorities to make practical contributions.

Patient research partnerships are reported as delivering value through every stage of the research process while increasing health self-management and research literacy. This course features leading faculty from Stanford University and global medical publishing experts leading efforts in patient partnership in medical research from one of the world's most influential general medical journals, The BMJ.

Prerequisites

This course is intended for clinicians, researchers, technologists, patients, and members of the general public. There are no prerequisites.

Dr. Chu is a Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and Director of the Stanford Anesthesia Informatics and Media (AIM) Lab. Dr. Chu founded the START online educational program as well as the Learnly online learning ecosystem for post-graduate anesthesiology education. He is an NIH-funded clinical researcher and is Executive Director of Stanford Medicine X, the world's most-discussed academic program on emerging technology and medicine. He also directs Medicine X | ED, a conference exploring the future of patient-centered medical education. He has written eight books, over 50 papers and over 50 book chapters in academic anesthesiology. He is a member of the editorial advisory board for The BMJ, one of the most influential general medical journals in the world.

Amy Price, PhD

Senior Research Advisor, Stanford Medicine X Program

Amy Price is a Senior Research Advisor to the Stanford Medicine X program. She also serves as Patient Editor for Research and Evaluation at The BMJ. She also has an educational affiliation at the University of Oxford. Amy’s background in international relief work, clinical neurocognitive rehabilitation, service on the boards of multiple patient organisations, and as a trauma survivor has equipped her with the flexible mindset to relate to all stakeholders and cultures. Amy’s experience and training has shown her that shared knowledge, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence based research can shape the future. Her goal is to mentor others to build clear channels to propel evidence into practice by supplying the public, and those in low resource areas, with tools to make evidence based healthcare choices.

Do I need to buy a textbook?

No, we will provide access to free open-access journal articles and online readings to accompany the course materials.

Will I receive a Statement of Accomplishment?

Yes, you have the option to obtain a Statement of Accomplishment from Stanford University for your work in this course if you complete all the assignments and achieve at least a 70% in the course. There is also the option of receiving Distinction on your Statement of Accomplishment for exceptional course performance (90%).

Do you have other courses I can take?

Yes, Stanford Medicine X plans to release a second course on patient and public partnership in medical research in the Spring of 2019. The topic of this course will be on partnership in peer review of medical research.

Can graduates of this course become activity facilitators or help with the discussion boards in future Stanford Medicine X program online courses?

Yes, learners who complete this course and obtain Statements of Accomplishment with Distinction will be considered for future involvement in Stanford Medicine X online courses as discussion moderators or activity facilitators at the discretion of the course instructors.
